Groot gees rock fees: 26 December, Stilbaai

Jess Henson - 17 Dec 2008, 00:00

(120 reads) Avontoer is amazing. Two weeks, two coasts, ten bands in a bus and an entourage preceding and following. What a way to get festive.

If you’re holidaying or living anywhere near Stilbaai, the day after Christmas you should treat your turkey hangover with the post-Christmas leg - Die Groot Gees Rock Festival. It boasts a combination of some of the Cape Town northern suburbs hottest bands bandying together in Stilbaai with brothers (and sisters) from across the land to sing in African.

If you go, you’ve got a date with the hitherto mythological "Die Heuwels Fantasties" who will give their first ever show. The band has an EP out, but has never gigged, leaving even its members unsure if they existed, namely, Fokof’s Johnny de Ridder and Hunter Kennedy and Pierre Greeff. That’s electronic Belville, baby.
If you go, you’ll be part of Die Helde's second last show ever. These bright ones are off to conquer their worlds in other ways after years of solid support from a devoted and delighted fan base (and a nod from daddybros, De Plate Kompanje, who are the skeleton of the ‘toer).
If you go, you’ll have a heartful of other talented musos making a magical noise including the everslick Foto Na Dans, singalong Straatligkinders, ready reggae Tidal Waves, brand New Holland, Zinkplaat, City Bowl Mizers, Ef-El, Captain Stu, The Pretty Blue Guns, Reaanrottweiller, Mr. Cat & The Jackal, Willim Welsyn & Die Sunrise Toffies, and Pity The Fool.

If you go, take off your gloves, and put on your dancing boots because Boxing Day never grooved so hard.
