Levi’s® Haus of Strauss Africa

Haus of Strauss is the pinnacle expression of the Levi’s® brand and exists to create energy within the music, art, and entertainment industries. Haus Africa is a residency for creative expression through style.

The space serves as a physical embodiment of the Levi’s® brand on the continent, a place to build community engagement and nurture and celebrate African creativity. This is achieved by hosting educational workshops and enriching network-based gatherings. We invite creators and innovators into Haus to work with our team to customize garments. This results in unique pieces that have a personal connection to the creator and carry a story that will accompany that garment throughout its life.

2022 saw Haus Africa enter its third year of operation with renewed energy and excitement to engage and create with our network and communities. The desire to elevate the offerings within the space has seen greater and more rewarding challenges faced than in previous years.

TAILOR WORKSHOP

Having successfully executed a weeklong upcycling workshop for burgeoning tailors in late 2021, the fruits of this labour were shared with a public audience at our first event of the year. Laylah Sallie is a student with a passion for garment design and construction. She is self-taught and has been making garments since her teens.

Tony Mpofu’s journey with upcycling started 5 years ago when he started customizing denim jackets as a form of income. The two young tailors were tasked with upcycling offcuts, old jeans and miscellaneous accessories provided by Haus Africa. They were mentored for the week by our Master Tailor, William Phala as well as an array of industry professionals. They each created a full outfit and accompanying accessory.

BONKO AND
LESEGO KHOZA

Bonko and Lesego Khoza are award-
winning actors and a powerhouse couple.

They entrusted the Haus team with the responsibility of delivering red carpet level custom outfits for the DSTV Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards. The outfits required weeks of custom bleaching,
unique garment construction and style curation that resulted in two eye-catching and interest-sparking looks for their
special night.

WOMEN’S EVENTS

Working with empowered and inspiring women speaks to the core of the brand’s values. Hosting events to celebrate the I Shape My World and Curvy events at Haus Africa saw the convergence of these incredible women and the people who are drawn to them.

ISMW
LUNATHI MAMPOFU

Lunathi Mampofu is an actress and founder of a self-defense training organization.

Her ISMW event hosted on International Women’s Day was focused around sharing her story and demonstrating the skills women need to keep themselves safe on a day-to-day basis. The experience was vulnerable, inspiring and unifying for everyone in attendance.

ISMW
LADY DU

Lady Du is the queen of Amapiano and has worked extremely hard to build her career and reverence for her music. Her artistry comes from a place of struggle and pain, an honesty she uses to inspire her audience and give hope to those around her. On National Women’s Day she treated a select audience to an intimate performance for the launch of her ISMW campaign.

CURVY LAUNCH
THULI P

Celebrating the beauty of women of every body type is essential, the Curvy range speaks to a major audience in South Africa and deserves an ambassador that speaks as authentically. Thuli Phongolo is a DJ, Actress and Entrepreneur who garners appreciation from her audience for sharing her life and journey openly. The launch event for her Curvy campaign saw a variety of women bonding over a delicious brunch as well as being fitted for the perfect pair of jeans.

501 DAY

The most important day on the Levi’s calendar deserves to be the biggest event on the calendar. Celebrating 149 years of 501 saw Haus Africa transformed into an almost unrecognizable labyrinth of denim and activities. And not even a rainstorm could dampen the spirit of this momentous occasion. An in-Haus display of the exclusive Shelflife x Levi’s Haus Africa 501 Day collaboration was included in the event as well.

MOONGA K
ROCKING THE DAISIES

2022 has seen the return of large-scale events and music festivals which provides us with the opportunity to dress and create unique outfits for musicians to showcase on big stages.

Haus Africa established a relationship with Moonga K in 2021 and continued the journey this year by dressing him and his band for his performance at Rocking the Daisies. The inspiration behind Moonga’s look was androgynous, groovy and powerful. Bleaching, colour dyeing, upcycling and lasering techniques were used to create his outfit, illustrating the vast array of resources available at Haus. His band were kitted out in denim two-piece outfits that spoke to each of their styles.

CUSTOM GARMENTS

The team at Haus Africa continues to elevate the experience of the guests who visit the space, taking on greater creative challenges and incorporating new techniques to keep the projects fresh and interesting. We have had the pleasure of hosting a diverse selection of guests, affording people the opportunity to push the boundaries of their own style, flex creative muscles they may not have used to their full potential and ensure that everyone walks away from Haus Africa feeling confident, inspired and ready to show off their new clothes.
